Helen Fallowfield

My name is Helen Fallowfield and I was introduced to ‘Textiles’ having stumbled upon Kim Thittichai’s Experimental Textiles course several years ago.
The course opened up a whole new world to me, taught me new skills and gave me the confidence to experiment. It has also been my therapy when life has become fraught.

In the past, I have enjoyed working with natural fabrics, fibres and yarns, manipulating them and putting them together with machine and hand stitch then adding colour where and when it is required with the use of natural and synthetic dyes.

Recently, I have been working a lot with my computer, manipulating my images, either a photograph or my own drawing of a face, then printing them onto different materials.

I like working on heavy tissue paper and silk organza and I sometimes use different layers and the addition of appropriate text to build up the image. This is work I have been developing for the degree that I am studying for, in Embroidered Textiles.

I enjoy deconstruction and reconstruction and working with recycled materials. I have also had success using paper string, knitting and crocheting with it, and testing out its endless possibilities.
